The Usual Suspects

by crystalrach

We begin by cutting between 2 locations, a police station and an unknown motel.

At the police station, a detective is on his mobile phone but when he removes a fax from the machine and reading it he cuts his conversation short.

At the motel, armed police and another detective are headed to a room.

In the Police interview room, the detective is talking to someone but we cannot see who it is, but the words “torture” and “murder” are mentioned.

The cops stop outside a room. They break down the door and we see it is Sam in the room, hands held high.

Back at the police station, the detective is still talking….to Dean. He is handcuffed to the desk.

In the police holding room, Sam is stood by the window. The female detective comes in and offers him a coffee. She knows all about Sam, including the death of his girlfriend Jessica and him leaving college. He tells her he’s been on a road trip with Dean because he needed time off, oh and they saw the second largest ball of twine. She tells Sam that the cops in St Louis are investigating as to how Dean faked his own death, after torturing all the young women. They have possible hits for Deans fingerprints and that he is as good as gone, especially after being found in Karen Giles’ house, but that Sam can still have a life. He starts to tell her how they found out about the death of Tony Giles, but we see a slightly different version.....

Sam is walking along outside a diner, with 2 coffees, to a table where Dean is sat studying a paper. Dean shows Sam the article about the death of Anthony Giles. Security cameras failed to pick anything up – an invisible killer? It is also decided (by Dean) that Dean is Mulder and Sam is Scully, because Sam’s “a red-headed woman”.

Sam tells the detective they went to see Karen Giles and she was “pretty cut up”.

Dean and Sam are sat in the living room at the Giles residence, both are wearing suits. Karen is looking at insurance papers, she is crying. Sam asks her if she can remember anything about the night Tony died. She tells them they were supposed to go out for dinner but he phoned to say he had to work late. She also tells them that he’d had a nightmare the day before, that he saw a pale woman with red eyes at the end of their bed. At this point she seems confused as to why an insurance company would want to know all this information, so Dean informs her that the company are “very thorough”.

Sam tells the detective they gave Karen a hug and left. The female detective is irritated now and tells Sam that witnesses saw them breaking into Tony Giles office. He insists that Karen called them and asked if they could retrieve some of Tony’s belongings as the police weren’t letting her enter a crime scene and that she gave them a key.

Dean and Sam pick the lock and enter Tony’s office. Sam’s flashlight lights up a pools of blood, Tony’s blood from where his throat was slit. A quick look around reveals several printed sheets of paper; the words “danashulps” typed over and over. It is also revealed on the glass desk. Some time later, Dean has finished searching filing cabinets and drawn a blank and Sam is sat at Tony’s computer, trying to hack his password. Dean sits down to wait but annoys Sam (making silly noises) so they agree that Dean should visit Karen Giles again while Sam continue his mission to access Tony’s files.

Sam tells the detective that Dean went to talk to Karen again because she had been so upset earlier, and that he went back to the motel room. The detective sows him the motel matchbook they found on Dean, that was how they knew where Sam was. She also asks him why they suddenly split up, was it that Dean left him to murder Karen? Sam insists that Dean did not murder anyone, but the detective said she heard the 911 call from Karen…..

We see Karen watching television, she is crying. She thinks she sees someone in the hallway, shakes her head, but when she looks up someone is standing in the other room. She screams, but when she switches on the light they are gone. She runs upstairs and locks herself in her room to call 911, but as she is talking the phone line goes dead and the lights go out. The printer in the corner of the room starts printing, the words “danashulps” filling the page. She hides in the closet but when she turns around a pale woman with red eyes is standing there.
Dean is at the front door of the Giles residence, knocking the door and calling Karen. When he gets no reply, he picks the lock and goes inside. He finds Karen, lay in a pool of blood in her bedroom, the printed piece of paper beside her. She also has red marks on her wrists, like bruising. Unfortunately the police show up at this point and catch Dean.

Dean is sat on his own in the interrogation room; the male detective is the other side of the 2-way mirror. The female detective enters the room to see how he is getting on interviewing Dean. The male detective is clearly becoming more annoyed with Deans “wise-ass remarks”. The female detective says that Sam’s story matches Deans to the very last detail. On their way to the coffee machine she seems to be having doubts, there is no weapon, no motive. Pete reminds her about St Louis and he is convinced Dean is their guy. Diana says she knows Tony was Petes friend, but he did know a lot of criminal types, Pete replies well of course he was a defence lawyer. He kisses Diana before they go their separate ways.

In the interrogation room Dean is muttering “danashulps” to himself.

Sam is writing the same name on a piece of paper.

Dean is still muttering. “Maybe its not a name?”

“An anagram maybe?” ponders Sam.

As Dean is pondering the anagram, a man enters the interrogation room as introduces himself as Deans lawyer. Dean asks for paper and a pen, and as the lawyer is talking to him he scribbles down various words from the letters. He asks the lawyer if he can make out any street names or anything else from the words he has made. When the lawyer points out how much trouble he is in, Dean asks him to just humour him. The lawyer spots the street name of “Ashland”, Dean scribbles on another piece of paper and asks if he can take a note to Sam. The lawyer explains that Dean could be facing a death penalty, to which Dean replies, “Thanks for the overview, Matlock. But if you wanna help me, I need you to see my brother.”

Diana is sitting at her computer, typing, when suddenly “danashulps” is typed, over and over again, on her screen. Then it is gone. She looks around nervously.

The lawyer gives Sam the note and tells Sam he’d like to discuss his case. "Sure thing, Matlock." However before they can begin, Diana walks in and asks the lawyer to go with her as Dean is about to confess!

In the interrogation room, Dean is sat at the table, a camera is set up facing him and several other cops are in the room. Dean begins his “confession” - "My name is Dean Winchester. I'm an Aquarius. I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women.” He continues to tell all that he and Sam were conducting an investigation, that they think it is a vengeful spirit. Unfortunately this make Pete very mad and he shoves Dean against the wall before ordering him to be handcuffed.

Diana and Pete walk into the holding room to find it empty. Diana reads the note, "Hilts – it's a street Ashland – McQueen". She explains to Pete that Hilts was Steve McQueens character in “The Great Escape”.

Diana walks into the ladies bathroom and stops at the sink. Suddenly the hot tap turns on and fogs the mirror. Then writing starts to appear on the mirror – “danashulps”.

Diana goes to see Dean and asks him about what he does. He spots red marks on her wrists and realises she too has seen the sprit. He tells her to go to the first motel in the yellow pages and ask for Jim Rockford, it’ll be Sam and he can help her.

Sam is sitting looking at some papers when he hears a knock at the door. He opens it to see Diana standing outside. He looks at her wrists, and asks her if the bruises showed up after she saw it. She says yes. Sam asks her to tell him exactly what she saw. Sam tells her she can arrest him later, after she lives through this, but right now she has to talk to him. Diana tells him the exact description that Karen gave, except she also adds that her throat was cut. She says that it appeared she was trying to talk to her, but she couldn't. She looks at some photos that Sam has and finds one girl that she recognizes. She hands him a picture of a blond girl. Her name was Claire Becker, she had been arrested twice for drugs – both Diana and Pete used to work in narcotics.

Sam and Diana are in Claire's old apartment. They split up and Diana hears something behind her as he walks. She turns around and sees Claire. She starts coming toward Diana, reaching out. Diana yells for Sam and he comes, but by the time he arrives, Claire is gone. Diana and Sam move a shelf to get to the window. On the other side of the window is written ' 'Ashland' and underneath is only part of a word, 'sup'. "Our mystery word," says Diana. Sam takes out his EMF meter and, after explaining it to Diana, he picks up a signal from inside a wall. He breaks in the wall and says he can definitely see something in there. As he continues breaking in the wall, Sam is bothered, vengeful spirits don't want to be wasted, so why would Claire lead them to her remains? They lift out the body, which is in a bag. Sam cuts the rope tying it and unwraps it. They take a look at Claire's body inside, and Diana sees that her wrists are tied. Sam agrees that her wrists would be bruised, just like Diana's. Diana then finds a necklace on the girl. Diana says that she has seen one like it, they're very rare. She pulls one just like it from under her shirt. She says Pete gave it to her. Sam realises that Claire is in fact a death omen, trying to warn people. He asks Diana just how well does she know her partner? Diana remembers that while she worked in narcotics, a stash of heroin went missing, it had to be a cop but they never found out who it was.

Pete is driving down a road at night in a cop van, Dean is in the back. He asks why Pete would decide to transfer him to St. Louis at two in the morning. Pete doesn't answer. Diana and Sam are in her car. Diana hangs up her phone and tells Sam that Pete just left – with Dean.

Pete stops the van after pulling off the road. He gets out of the van and yanks Dean out after him, throwing him to the ground. Pete tells Dean that the people in St. Louis will never buy Dean's story. He pulls out his gun. Then someone calls Pete’s name. Both men turn to see Diana and Sam. Diana is pointing a gun at Pete. She tells Pete she knows about Claire. Pete says that Claire was going to turn him in, as was Tony and Karen. He then tells Diana he loves her. She slowly lowers the gun. He turns toward Dean and suddenly Diana shoots him. Dean rolls out of the way. Suddenly Pete jumps onto Diana. Sam comes forward, but Pete aims the gun at him, then aims the gun at Dean again. Both boys hold up their hands. Suddenly Diana looks behind Pete. Claire is standing there. Pete turns around and sees her, and then Diana shoots him from behind.

Diana kneels beside Pete's body while Dean and Sam watch. She walks over to them. Sam explains that Claire should now be at rest. Diana tells them that Pete crewed up both their cases, which she can take care of, but not the St Louis case. She says she’ll report that they escaped while her back was turned. Dean asks her if she knows where his car is, and she tells him it's at the impound on Robertson. Sam says it's okay, they'll just improvise, as they're pretty good at that.. "Nice lady," says Sam as they walk away. "Yeah, for a cop," says Dean. "Did she look familiar to you?" "No, why?" asks Sam, pushing Dean with his shoulder gently. "I dunno. Anyway are you hungry?" "No." "For some reason I could really go for some pea soup."
