Folsom Prison Blues

by Michaela

We open with a shot of the exercise yard in Green River County Detention Centre. The inmates are working out, playing cards and talking. We cut to inside the prison where workmen are using a blow-torch to un-weld a door in a wing of the prison that has clearly not been used for some time. Two of the men are talking about how ridiculous it is that first they close off the cell block and then they open it up again. One of them comments dryly “There's your tax dollars at work.”

As they finally get the door open we see a dank and scary looking cell. As the two men go inside we see their breath start to show as if there has been a sudden drop in temperature. One of them asks “Do you feel that, man?” just as there is a gust of wind that blows past them and out the door, scattering papers in the corridor outside as it goes.

We cut to another cell block, this time occupied, and see a prisoner – Randell – lying on his bunk, reading. Suddenly the light in his cell starts to flicker, and he looks up at it frowning. He gets up and peers out of the small window in his cell door, the light still flickering. We see the hands on the clock in the corridor slow and stop, and as we cut back to Randell we suddenly see something move quickly in front of his cell. He jumps back from the door, startled, and then moves back cautiously to look. He starts waving his arm through the bars at the camera fixed in the corridor and yelling for the guard.

We see the monitors in the guard's room showing various cameras around the prison, and on the one showing Randell's cell the image is flickering. The guard is reading something and eating, but eventually looks up and sees something is going on. He turns on the sound and hears Randell calling for someone to come quickly. Sighing, he gets up and radios to the other guards that he is going down to B-Block and that it's “Randell again.”

Back on the block the other prisoners are calling out for Randell to shut up, but he just calls back did they not see that? He also says they must be blind, as clearly they didn't. He jumps back as a baton is slammed against the bars suddenly and we see the guard. As he steps up to the bars he tells Randell to cool it. Randell insists there's someone out in the corridor, but the guard is having none of it. He just repeats his instruction for Randell to calm down and tells him to turn out his light. Reluctantly Randell gives in and goes back to lie down, turning out his light as he does so. Satisfied, the guard walks away and radios for “Lights out in B-Block.” As he walks back to the main gate, the lights are shut off plunging the block into semi-darkness.

As he walks we suddenly see a figure walking close behind him, but when he turns round nothing is there. Looking slightly concerned now, he hurries towards the gate and as he reaches it we notice you can see his breath as if the air is very cold. The guard turns back to look along the corridor, clearly sensing something is there, and as he does so the gate suddenly slams shut on his left arm. He cries out in pain and tries to prise the gate off his arm, but it won't budge. He turns round and sees something, and starts to yell “No!” sounding terrified. We don't see what happens to him, but the screams continue until suddenly they are cut off with a gurgling sound. The prisoners are calling out, asking what's happening, and we see Randell trying to see through the bars on his cell door to catch of glimpse of the guard.

Three months later we are now inside Arkansas Museum of Anthropology. There are many artefacts on display in glass cabinets, and as the camera pans round we see a door open and Dean and Sam enter, using flashlights to see where they're going. Dean is consulting a piece of paper and as they walk Sam looks nervous, telling Dean he hates this plan. Dean dryly replies “Yeah, I got that the first ten times I heard it.” They clearly have a destination in mind and eventually they reach some cabinets, which they open with ease. They start to take out certain artefacts, Sam picking up an ancient axe and Dean an antique looking knife. As they study the items in their hands, they both hear the noise of a door closing. Dean turns to look at Sam, who inclines his head indicating that they go check it out. As they go back into the corridor, walking fast, we see several security guards pointing guns at them. The boys try and go the other way but there are yet more guards. They are told to freeze and get down on their knees and they reluctantly comply, lacing their hands behind their heads as they do so. As they are handcuffed, Dean shots Sam a satisfied look but Sam just looks nervous and unhappy.

We cut to Sam having a mug shot taken, holding up a board with 81A3826 and Little Rock City Police, Little Rock, AR on it. He is photographed from all angles then it is Dean's turn. His board has 81A3827 and the same police details on it, and he appears far more relaxed than Sam. He even pulls a face for one of the shots, saying he calls this one “The Blue Steel.” A voice out of shot tells him to go back to the line up, but before he does Dean smirks and asks “Who looks better? Me or Nick Nolte?” The cop is clearly not amused and tells him to shut up.

Dean is waiting in an interview room and we see the door open and Agent Hendrickson walk in, who we last saw at the end of Usual Suspects. Dean looks unworried and just says it's about time – he'd like a cheeseburger. Hendrickson is not impressed, and shares a look with his partner. He says Dean thinks he's funny and Dean replies he thinks he's adorable. Hendrickson says it's a pleasure to finally meet him in person and introduces himself and his partner. Obviously recognising the name from the phone call at the bank, Dean stops smirking. Dean repeats the name and says “Not the Milwaukee Agent Hendrickson?” and Hendrickson replies “Live and in person.” Dean is clearly a little rattled to hear this.

Hendrickson has a file in his hand which he opens and shows Dean a shot of him taken during the bank robbery. Hendrickson tells him it's a nice shot and throws the photograph on the table, telling him he can hang that one in his cell. Dean tries to keep up the bravado, saying they can just forget about the cheeseburgers, but Hendrickson isn't buying it. He gets his partner to read out the list of charges, which include mail fraud, credit card fraud, grave desecration. Hendrickson interrupts and tells him to skip to the good ones and his partner continues, listing armed robbery, kidnapping and three counts of first degree murder. Dean is looking worried now, and Hendrickson adds that after Milwaukee “Your brother is now a suspect in a murder case himself.” Hendrickson adds that for the two of them, “Screwed to hell is a major understatement.”

Dean rallies and attempts to look confident, and says where there's life there's hope. Hendrickson replies that's what he kept thinking while he was searching for them all over. He leans on the table and says their Dad taught them well, the way they cover their tracks and just disappeared after Milwaukee. He says he near went nuts trying to find them. He then says that after all that, they get tripped on a motion detector, sounding sceptical. He says he was surprised, but before Dean can say anything the door opens and a woman walks in. She asks if he is Dean Winchester, to which Dean replies “In the flesh.” with a grin, and Hendrickson looks less pleased to see her and asks who she is. She introduces herself as Mara Daniels, from the Public Defenders Office, and shakes hands with Dean. She tells him she has been assigned his and Sam's case.

Introductions over with, Mara looks at both agents and asks if one of them is Hendrickson. Hendrickson replies yes, and says they are not quite done here. Mara smiles and says “Yeah, you are – and if you don't mind, I'd like to meet with my clients privately.” Hendrickson doesn't look happy and Dean smirks cockily at him.

We next see Sam is now in the room and as Mara opens her briefcase and takes out some papers, she tells them that unfortunately the arraignment on the breaking and entering charges won't be until Tuesday. Dean asks if that means they'll keep them in the County Jail and when she replies that's right, Sam asks if that is Green River Detention Centre. When she says yes, the boys share a significant look. Mara tells them that considering the charges they are facing, no judge in their right mind is going to grant them bail. Sam snorts and looks up at the ceiling, seemingly not surprised by this news. Dean is also unsurprised and says they'd already figured that. Mara then says that extradition papers have been filed from five separate states, the two most important ones being Wisconsin and Missouri - the bank robbery and the murder raps. Sam looks worried and asks how long they can stall them and Mara replies a week, maybe less. Dean considers this and glances at Sam, who looks really unhappy about this news.

We next see the boys getting off a bus at the detention centre, handcuffed and chained to other prisoners. Sam keeps looking at the cuffs and chains in disgust. As they walk past the exercise yard the other prisoners line up to watch them and there are a few comments and whistles, including one prisoner who points and says “You're mine.” Sam looks pretty scared but Dean just grins and tells him not to worry – he won't trade him for smokes. Sam is not amused. Inside the prison they are now in orange jumpsuits and carrying a blanket, towel and toilet roll. The guards direct the prisoners into cells in twos and Dean gets put with a rough looking guy with long hair. Dean smiles and says he'll take the top bunk, but the other prisoner just shakes his head and puts his stuff on there with a look that doesn't invite any argument. Dean says ok, and turns to watch Sam walk into the cell opposite. Sam nods at the prisoner already in there who stands up, revealing that he is taller than Sam and about twice his size, not to mention pretty mean looking. Sam swallows and turns to face the open door. He and Dean share a look as the doors to both their cells are firmly shut.

Later we see the prisoners moving along the corridor, being scanned by a guard at the end. Sam is in line behind Dean, and Dean says his roomie doesn't say much and asks what Sam's is like. Sam says he keeps staring at him in a way that is making him really uneasy. Dean quips that “Sounds like you're making new friends.” Sam is clearly not in the mood for jokes though and tells him that this is without a doubt the dumbest, craziest thing they have ever done, and that's in a long career of dumb and crazy. Dean frowns and tells him to calm down, that this is all part of the plan. Sam is unconvinced and says oh, really – so Hendrickson showing up was part of the plan? Dean reluctantly admits that no, that wasn't. Hendrickson moved faster than he'd anticipated. Dean still says it's not a problem though – all they have to do is find the ghost, put the sucker down and get themselves a couple of those teardrop tattoos. Sam asks about the escape plan, and Dean tells him it's a 100% sure thing – he wouldn't have gone in if it wasn't. Sam still looks worried as Dean carries on saying that the place has all the signs of a haunting, with 4 innocent people dead so far. Sam snorts in disbelief and says “Yeah – innocent.” Dean frowns and says “What are you from Texas all of a sudden?”. He continues that just because these people are in jail doesn't mean they deserve to die, and if they don't stop this thing people will continue to die – they do this job wherever it takes them. Sam, still not convinced, asks Dean to be straight with him – is he doing this for Deacon? When Dean answers yes, Sam replies they barely even know the guy, but Dean says they know he served in the core with John, that he saved their Dad's life and that they owe him. Sam says alright, but doesn't Dean think he's asking a little much of them? Dean is adamant that doesn't matter. He says they may not be saints, but they are loyal and they pay their debts. He says that means something to him and it ought to mean something to Sam too. Sam looks uncomfortable and doesn't reply. Dean admits that he's not thrilled with the situation either, but Deacon asked them to hunt this thing down and that's exactly what they are going to do.

We next see them in the dining room, Sam holding up what looks like noodles on his fork and eyeing them with disgust. Dean is eating his food, and says the chicken isn't half bad. Sam says great, Dean can finish his and pushes his tray across the table to him. As Dean now starts on Sam's food, Sam discusses the case. He says spirit suspect number one is Mark Moody and Dean says that's right. Moody was a psycho killer extraordinare, and says he was into Satanism, ritual murder and died in the jail. Sam asks if Dean is sure it's him, and Dean replies he's pretty sure. Sam says considering their circumstances he's gonna need a little more than pretty sure, and Dean says ok – he's really pretty sure. At Sam's disbelieving look, Dean explains that Moody died of a heart attack, which is what all the victims in the jail have died of. Also he died in the old cell block, which was closed after his death about 30 years ago and has just been reopened. That's when the killings started. Sam asks if Dean thinks that Moody's spirit was released somehow, and when Dean mumbles an affirmative Sam asks what if he was cremated? Dean replies that he's guessing there is something of his still in the old cell block that's keeping him around. They just need to find it and “Well, you know the rest.”

Having finished eating Dean gets up and walks off. Sam follows but as he is walking another prisoner bumps into him, hard. Sam steps back and apologises, even though it wasn't his fault, but the other prisoner is clearly looking for a fight and tells Sam to watch where he's going. Sam apologises again, but Dean steps in front of him and says a little aggressively to the other prisoner that Sam said he was sorry. Sam says Dean's name warningly, but the prisoner is angry now, stepping into Dean's personal space and asking if he's talking to him. Twice. Dean wisecracks “Great – another guy who's seen Taxi Driver one too many times.” He says yeah, he's talking to him and to let it go. The prisoner turns round and walks over to a table where he bends down to talk to one of the other prisoners. Dean turns to Sam and says cockily that that's how you've got to talk to these guys – instant respect. Sam is looking past him though and sees that the prisoner is now coming towards him with his friend, both looking menacing, and replies “You were saying?” Dean turns and sees them, muttering “Oh great,” just as the first prisoner throws a punch at him. He dodges it easily, grabbing the guy's arm and holding onto it. Bending down he says they can end this now, no harm, no foul, but the guy is in no mood to listen and manages to bring his elbow up and hit Dean in the face. Dean staggers but regains his hold and slams the guy face first into a pillar, holding his arm up his back. The guy stamps on Dean's foot, forcing him to let go, and Dean kicks the guy in the groin and knees him in the face. The guy goes down, clutching his nose, but as the guy's friend tries to grab hold of Dean the guards arrive. One of them walks over, saying “On your feet, Lucas.” to the guy Dean just put down. Dean looks at the guard apprehensively as he takes out his baton and walks over to him, holding the end under Dean's chin. He asks Dean what his name is and Dean replies “Winchester.” The guard says “Well, Winchester – not a good start.” He holds Dean in this position for a few moments and Sam looks on with a worried expression, eyeing Lucas as well. Eventually the guard says to take both of them to solitary, and the guards grab Lucas and Dean and march them away. As he passes Sam, Dean asks over his shoulder if they're having fun yet? Sam is not amused and looks even more scared when Lucas's friend makes a throat slitting gesture then points at him.

In solitary, Dean is sitting on the floor resting his arms on his knees. He calls out that he wishes he had a baseball. Lucas, who is in the cell opposite, goes up to the open window and asks Dean what he said. Dean moves to his window and repeats that he wishes he had a baseball, like Steve McQueen. Lucas says he wishes he had a bat, so he could bash Dean's head in. Dean goes back to sitting against the wall and mutters so much for the bonding in solitary moment. Seconds later the light in Dean's cell starts to flicker and he notices he can see his breath. Knowing what this means, Dean mutters “Oh crap.” and moves towards the window in the cell door again. He looks out at the clock and sees the hands stop. He calls out to Lucas to listen to him and stay very still. Lucas ignores the advice though, and moves to look out of the window in his door. At first we see nothing but the corridor, then suddenly a scary looking face appears, with two black eyes. Lucas jumps and scrambles away from the door, clearly frightened. Suddenly a hand grabs him from behind and when he turns round, we see the same face that was at the door a moment ago. Lucas starts to clutch his chest and grunt in pain. Veins pop out all over his face as he continues to writhe in agony, and the black eyes narrow as the thing they belong to clearly controls what is happening to Lucas. He screams and we see Dean looking out of his cell door window, wide eyed and helpless to do anything.

We cut back to the police station where Hendrickson and his partner are going through paperwork. Mara Daniels walks in and asks if she can have a word, and Hendrickson agrees. She sits down and says she's been going through the case files against Dean and Sam, and that there are some weird inconsistencies. Hendrickson dryly replies “Welcome to my world.” Mara smiles politely, and says she spoke to a cop in Baltimore who “Swears up and down that these boys saved her life and helped her catch a killer.” She says she also spoke to a witness from the bank robbery in Milwaukee who also swore that Dean and Sam saved her life too. Hendrickson asks exactly what they saved her from, and Mara admits that the girl was unclear on that part. Hendrickson says that's because she's nuts – he was in Milwaukee and spoke to her and the other witnesses. He says that all he knows is everywhere Dean and Sam go, people die. Mara adamantly insists that they just don't seem cut and dried guilty to her, and that there's more to it. Hendrickson is unconvinced. Mara says she can't put her finger on it – it's just strange. Hendrickson is dismissive and says that “The grown ups,” are trying to get some work done, so if she wouldn't mind leaving them to it. Without any hard evidence, Mara reluctantly leaves.

Back at the prison, Sam is mopping floors in the toilets with Randall. He asks how Randell is doing, and he dryly replies he's 54 years old, mopping the floor of a crapper with bars on the windows. How does Sam think he's doing? Sam sheepishly admits it wasn't the best opener and introduces himself. Randall does the same, and Sam casually asks wasn't he the one who was with the guard when he died? Randall says yes, and Sam asks him what happened. Randall says they say the stress of the job got to him, but he clearly doesn't believe that. Sam asks what he thinks really happened, and Randall doesn't answer but instead asks Sam why he's inside. Sam looks half exasperated and half affectionate as he says “Because I got an idiot for a brother.” Randall laughs and says yeah, that will do it. He goes on to say that the place isn't so bad – compared to the old cell block it's the Hilton. Sam's interest is peaked and he asks if Randall was in the old block? Randall says yes, he was a regular customer and Sam mentions about that being where Ron Moody was kept. Randall says he was also there the night “That lunatic bought it,” and Sam eagerly asks him if it was a heart attack. Randall dryly says that sure his heart stopped beating – after the guards stopped using his head for batting practice. Sam is stunned that he was beaten and nobody reported it. Randall says simply that you kept your mouth shut unless you wanted a 'heart attack' yourself. He says he was in the cell the next morning, mopping up the blood, and that there was a lot of it. Sam looks interested and asks exactly how much blood there was.

In the exercise yard Dean is playing cards and wiping the floor with the other prisoners. He already has a stack of cigarettes that he's won, and as Sam stands there watching he wins again, much to the anger of the prisoner he was playing against. Dean is cocky about his success and tells Sam “It's like picking low hanging fruit.” Sam is obviously unimpressed by Dean's antics and reminds him he doesn't even smoke. Dean replies that maybe not, but cigarettes are currency in there. Sam says he's got a lead on Moody and Dean says so does he – Moody paid him a visit last night. Sam looks alarmed as Dean explains about the clock stopping, the cold spots and the flickering lights. He says the spirit “Did everything but yell boo.” Sam is concerned, and asks what happened. Dean explains that he walked right by him, but Lucas wasn't so lucky and he heard him screaming. He's clearly disturbed by what happened and says even though the guy was a jerk, he didn't deserve to go like that. Sam looks more relieved than anything that the spirit went for Lucas and not Dean. Getting back on topic, he says he found out where the remains are and explains about the blood in the cell. Dean is confused and says didn't Moody die of a heart attack? Sam dryly replies yeah, right after the guards had worked him over. He says apparently there was so much blood they had trouble mopping it all up. Dean asks how they're gonna get in and Sam says he has a plan. Dean smiles proudly and says “That's the Sammy I know. C'mon man, you're like Clint Eastwood in Escape From Alcatraz.” Sam rolls his eyes and says even if they do find something, how are they gonna burn it without any accelerant? Dean looks thoughtful as he says it's a good thing he's like James Garner from Great Escape. Sam looks confused as Dean gathers up all his cigarettes and calls out “Hey fellas – who's ready to deal?”

We next see the boys in line for food in the dinner hall and Dean asks Sam a little nervously if he's sure about this. Sam replies pretty sure, and Dean says considering the circumstances he'd like a little better than pretty sure. Sam repeats Dean's line earlier of “Ok, I'm really pretty sure.” Dean isn't impressed. We next see Dean approaching a huge, tattooed prisoner and sitting down at the table with him. As he does so he says to “Save room for dessert, Tiny.” The prisoner looks at him, unimpressed, and Dean continues saying he can't help noticing the guy is “Two tons of fun,” and asks if he has a thyroid problem or is it some deep seated self esteem issue? He continues by saying “You know they're just doughnuts – they're not love.” We cut briefly to Sam in the background and see he is keeping an eye on what is happening. The prisoner laughs but then punches Dean hard in the face before he can defend himself. Dean gets up, shaking his head, and hits the guy back but he barely reacts. Sam meanwhile is watching the nearby guards, waiting for them to react to the fight. Dean continues to punch the guy, with little success, and in the end resorts to headbutting him. Staggering backwards with his head now bleeding, Dean watches as a guard comes up behind the prisoner and grabs him. The guy simply turns round and throws the guard over the table as Dean watches in horror. The other guards finally react and run over, giving Sam the opportunity to sneak into the kitchen. Grabbing some salt as he walks through he pulls off a grill and climbs into a ventilation shaft. Back in the dinning hall, Dean is still getting beaten up by the prisoner and despite the presence of the guards the guy is doing a pretty good job of strangling him. Finally the guards overpower him and Dean drops to the floor. The guard from before, who put Dean and Lucas in solitary, grabs hold of Dean's face as one of the other guards holds him and says if they'd waited any longer Dean would be dead. Dean remarks that they waited long enough, and the guard hits him in the stomach with his baton. As Dean gasps for breath, he grabs hold of Dean's hair and tells him to do himself a favour “Don't talk.” Dean doesn't seem to have enough air for a smart-alec response at this point anyway. The guard steps back and tells the guards to take both of them to the infirmary. Dean winces and closes his eyes as he is dragged off.

We see Sam in the corridor of the old cell block. Making his way to Moody's old cell, he opens the door and goes inside. There is an old mattress there which is stained with blood. Sam empties the salt cellar on it, pulls a lighter out of his pocket and empties the fuel onto it too, and then throws a match on the whole thing. It lights easily and Sam watches, satisfied, as it burns.

In the infirmary Dean and the other prisoner, Tiny, are on separate beds that are surrounded by a cage. Dean calls out to him and when Tiny replies, Dean apologises for what he said earlier. He says he can't tell him why, but that he had to make him angry. Tiny says it's ok. Truth is, he does have self-esteem issues. Dean has a 'what the hell?' expression as Tiny confesses that his old man treated Tiny and his brother like crap, right up to the day died. Dean asks how he died, and Tiny replies that his brother shot him. Dean looks slightly disconcerted by the path the conversation has taken, but simply says “Ok.” Suddenly he looks over and sees what is clearly a spirit. It's a woman, and as Dean mutters “Oh crap,” she starts to move towards him. Dean looks around frantically for something to defend himself with but there is nothing. He looks for a way out of the cage as Tiny asks what's wrong, sounding concerned. Dean finally spots a small salt cellar on the dinner tray and grabs that. The spirit has by now reached the cage and she throws him against the wall. Tiny asks again what is wrong, but Dean is too stunned to answer. As he lies on the floor she suddenly appears above him and grabs his chest. Dean grunts in pain and starts to struggle to breath as she clearly does something to his heart. He manages to get the top off of the salt and throws it at her and she disappears. He lays there, gasping for breath and clutching his chest in pain, and we suddenly hear Tiny yell out. Dean staggers to his feet and calls out to Tiny, but there is no reply only the sound of a struggle and grunts of pain. Dean rattles the cage and shouts for the guards.

We cut to the exercise yard and Dean and Sam are walking. Sam says “What – so you're telling me it wasn't Moody?” and Dean replies not unless he liked going around dressed like a nurse. As Sam absorbs this information, Dean remarks about poor Tiny and Sam asks if they're now dealing with the ghost of some nurse who worked there. Dean says he doesn't know, but he's guessing it is, and Sam replies that “I don't know, I guess isn't working for me right now.” clearly not happy about the prospect of having to deal with another spirit. He is adamant that whatever happens, they are getting out tonight. Dean says they'll just have to do some more research and Sam asks how, since they're stuck in jail.

The boys go and talk to Randall. He asks why they want to know about some nurse and Dean says they have their reasons but they'll make it worth his while, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. Randall takes them, and Dean gives a description of the spirit asking if he remembers someone like that. Randall says yes, but when Dean asks if he remembers her name he says it's still kind of fuzzy, angling for more 'payment'. Dean doesn't look keen, and Sam tells him to give them to Randall. Dean looks stubborn and says “I earned these,” but Sam gives him a 'come on' look and Dean reluctantly hands over another packet. As Randall pockets them with a satisfied smile he tells them her name was Glockner – Nurse Glockner. Sam asks if he knew her and Randall says he met her once. She gave him a tetnus shot and “Damn near jabbed the needle through the other side of my arm.” He tells them that you used to hear stories about her, and when Sam asks what stories he cautions them that cons love to tell stories but they're all liars. He continues anyway and says there were rumours about guys going to the Infirmary with a cold and coming out in a body bag. He says there was a rash of heart attacks, old and young alike, and Sam immediately focuses on that part. Randell says there were stories about Nurse Glockner doing “This Charles Bronson thing with a hypodermic,” to induce the heart attacks. Dean asks what happened to her and Randall says he doesn't know. He was released and by the time he came back in there again she was gone.

We cut to Dean and Sam sitting at a table. Sam says lets assume the stories about Glockner were true, and Dean says it's a thought – in life she was a vigilante and in death the same thing. Sam says ok, but how is she connected with the old cell block and if she's killing cons, why kill that one guard? Dean says he did hear in the yard rumours that the guard wasn't squeaky clean so maybe she's going after anyone that breaks the law. He says that would explain why she went after him. Sam is looking at him slightly incredulously and repeats “You heard in the yard? Dean, does it bother you at all how easily you seem to fit in here?” Dean just grins and says no, not really. Sam shakes his head and gets back to the subject at hand, saying they need more info on Glockner – if she's buried and if so, where. He glances at the clock and adds they've only got 5 hours to get it. Dean looks unhappy but before he can say anything Sam tells him not to give him “That 'we gotta see this thing through' look. We are leaving – tonight.” Dean says he just doesn't want to let Deacon down – they owe him. Sam says maybe, but they don't owe him their lives. Dean gets up, still unhappy, and Sam asks him where he's going. He says he's going to talk to their lawyer and as he walks off Sam sighs, clearly worried about Dean's reluctance to leave if they can't finish the job.

We see Mara Daniels in the visiting room, talking to Dean on the phone and looking amazed as she says “You want me to what?” Dean gives her Nurse Glockner's details – he's asking her to look up the information on her for them and in particular how she died and where she's buried. Mara asks him if he's nuts and if he has any idea the kind of trouble they are in. Dean says he has a vague notion and she replies good, then they should talk about their case. Dean puts on his charming act and says he appreciates that she's trying to help them, but that this is the best way she can do that. Mara looks sceptical and asks him to explain how, and Dean says he wishes he could but he's just going to have to ask her to trust him. Mara asks why she should do that when Hendrickson says Dean is a monster. Dean laughs humourlessly and says he's wrong – he's not what they say he is. Mara tells him they all say that. Dean says that if she's as good a PD as he thinks she is, then she can tell just by looking if her clients are guilty. He asks her to look at him, really look, and tell him if he's guilty – they're not the bad guys. Mara stares at him, looking undecided.

We cut to Dean walking back into the exercise yard. Sam waves at him and Dean makes his way over to him. Sam asks if she went for it and Dean says not so much, but maybe she'll come around. Sam adamantly says they can't afford to wait around for that. Dean says they could give her another day but Sam says no – they are leaving tonight. Dean says so what – they're not gonna finish the job? They're just going to let these people die? Sam shakes his head and says not to give him that – it was Dean's stupid plan in the first place and he went along with it, but they are sticking to the plan. Dean starts to walk away and says fine – Sam can leave but he's going to stay. Sam follows him agitatedly, telling him not to walk away from him. Dean mutters “Screw you,” over his shoulder and Sam repeats it, grabbing Dean's arm and pulling him round forcefully. Dean shoves Sam away and they start to fight but the guards separate them almost instantly. The guard who punched Dean previously grabs hold of him again and says “Ok, hardcase – looks like the usual methods aren't gonna work with you.” He pushes Dean in front of him and turns to grab hold of Sam saying “You too sweetheart.” He and another guard cuff them both and drag them out of the exercise yard.

They are taken to what looks like the laundry and the guard who's been hassling Dean tells the other guard to take off – he wants to handle this alone. Dean looks wary as they are left alone with him, as does Sam. He walks towards them and stares for a second. Suddenly he grins widely and reaches out to pat Dean's face affectionately. Dean says “Deacon, you are beating the holy crap out of me, man.” The guard is actually John's friend and the one they are working for. Dean turns round and Deacon removes the cuffs, laughing as he says he thought he was going easy on him – he was just trying to make it look real. Dean rolls his eyes and says mission accomplished as he rubs his wrists where the cuffs have been. As he removes Sam's cuffs too, Deacon asks if it's over. Sam says no – it looks like it wasn't Moody after all. Deacon looks surprised as Sam explains about Nurse Glockner but says they are still shy on all the Intel they need. Dean turns to Sam and says that's why they should stick around, and Sam raises his eyebrows as he asks Dean if he wants to have that fight for real. Deacon has reached into his pocket for an envelope and tries to get the boys attention, but they continue to bicker about finishing the job as he watches them with fond amusement. Deacon says “Guys,” for the third time and finally Dean and Sam turn to him, saying “What?” at exactly the same time. Grinning, still clearly amused by their behaviour, Deacon finally gets a chance to explain that their lawyer left the envelope for them. As he hands it to Dean, Dean looks pleased with himself and says cockily “Would you look at that? I am freaking smooth.” Sam dryly asks is he's going to open the envelope if he's done patting himself on the back, and Deacon is openly trying not to laugh now at their banter. Dean just mutters “Yeah, yeah,” and opens it. Scanning the contents he says “Wow,” and Sam asks if he's going to share with the rest of the class? Dean throws him a glare, but goes ahead and tells them that Nurse Glockner died in the old cellblock. There was a riot after Moody was killed and she got caught in the middle. The prisoners dragged her to a solitary cell and gave her a severe cerebral oedema. Sam says so they basically bashed her head in. He asks if it says where she's buried and Dean says yes. Deacon looks pleased and says it's time to get them out of there. As he walks over to a large ventilation shaft Dean tells him not to worry – they'll get rid of this thing. Deacon takes off the cover off the vent and says good, cos he wants it out of his prison. He walks back to stand in front of Dean and Sam and looks at them fondly as he says he can't thank them enough for this – he knows he was asking a lot but they still came through. He says their daddy raised them right and Dean looks pleased. He looks even more pleased when Sam simply replies that they owed him. Shaking Sam's hand, Deacon pulls him into an embrace then does the same for Dean. He says he hopes to see them again, just not in there and the boys echo the sentiment with a grin, saying they'll do their best. Just as they are about to climb into the shaft Dean turns back and cheerily asks Deacon where he wants it. Deacon looks confused for a moment, then taking in Dean's smirk realises what he's referring to. With a rueful smile he points to a spot on his face. As Dean is about to hit him, Deacon asks him to “Make it look real, son.” Dean grins, as does Sam who is looking on, and he throws a strong punch that knocks Deacon to the ground.

We see Dean and Sam climbing up some stairs outside the prison. As they do Dean says “Oh man, are you a sight for sore eyes,” as they come across the Impala parked and waiting for them. Dean lovingly runs his hand along the trunk, and says he wishes he could see Hendrickson's face. Sam says he'd be happy if he never saw him again – they're not really out of the woods yet. Dean admits he's got a point when suddenly we hear alarm bells ring. Exchanging a glance they quickly get in the car and pull away, fast.

Deacon is being interviewed by Hendrickson, who is clearly mad as hell that they've escaped. He asks Deacon to repeat the story, that they got the drop on him and got away, and Deacon appears just as angry saying he knows he screwed up. Hendrickson doesn't seem keen on buying the story, wanting to know where they are headed, and makes him go through the whole day from the beginning, which Deacon does under duress. When he gets to the part about them having a visitor Hendrickson asks who it was and Deacon tells him it was their lawyer. Hendrickson shares a look with his partner at that.

We now see Hendrickson talking to Mara Daniels back at the police station. He tells her it's an easy question – what did her and Dean talk about? She tells him it was a private conversation between her and her client, but Hendrickson says dryly it's convenient that just three hours later he just happened to bust out. Mara shrugs, but Hendrickson is not giving up and asks again what Dean said. Mara looks uncomfortable.

We see Dean and Sam at the cemetery and Sam says they need to move it, in case Hendrickson gets to the lawyer. As they walk Dean says he thought she couldn't say anything because of lawyer/client privilege, but Sam replies that privilege doesn't apply. Dean looks horrified and says he means she'll talk? Sam says she has no choice – she'll have to. Dean is clearly not impressed by this news and they walk faster. Back at the police station Hendrickson is still questioning Mara, his demeanour getting more and more aggressive. He tells her he will put her on the hook for aiding and abetting if she doesn't tell him what Dean said. Mara reluctantly tells him about researching Nurse Glockner. She says they also wanted to know where she was buried. Hendrickson asks if she told them and when she says yes, he tells her to tell him.

We see a sign saying Mountainside Cemetery. Police cars are speeding along the road towards it. We cut to Dean and Sam digging at Nurse Glockner's grave. As they find the coffin we switch between them and Hendrickson, who is making his way through the cemetery by flashlight. We cut to Deacon, who is in the toilets of the prison splashing water on his face. As he dries his face, the light starts to flicker and he can suddenly see his breath. As he looks round Glockner's spirit appears behind him and throws him to the ground. We see the cops, lead by Hendrickson, running through the cemetery and Dean and Sam salting the bones ready to burn. Deacon is clutching his chest now as Glockner leans over him, whispering “You let those two go.” Back at the grave the boys drop the match into the grave and suddenly Glockner stands up and shrieks as her spirit is consumed in flames. Deacon sits up, gasping, and looks relieved. The boys watch the bones burn and we cut to Hendrickson looking around in frustration as there is clearly no one at the cemetery they are at. He turns to his partner and asks if he's sure this is the right one, and he replies that she definitely said it was Mountainside Cemetery. We cut to Dean and Sam again as they walk past a sign that says Green Valley Cemetery. Mara sent the FBI to the wrong one. The boys hurry back to the car as we see Mara walk out of the police building and give a satisfied smile as she gets into her car. Back at the other cemetery the truth is dawning on Hendrickson and he smiles humourlessly, knowing he's been duped and the Winchesters have got away again.

As they put their equipment back in the trunk, Sam looks unhappy. He says “I thought we were screwed before,” but doesn't finish the sentence. Dean knows what he means though and admits they've got to go deep this time. Sam says deep? This time they need to go to Yemen. Dean isn't quite sure he's ready for that and Sam manages a slight smile. They get into the Impala and drive off into the night as the glow from Nurse Glockner's grave lights the cemetery behind them.
