"Supernatural"
Jensen Ackles

"The real threat may be the human being."

Jensen Ackles plays the older brother Dean in "Supernatural", which is about two brothers who become hunters to destroy the demon who killed their mother when they were children. Jensen came to Japan to promote the DVD which will be released on August 10. He has a very wild image as the character Dean, but Jensen himself was a polite and elegant young man. He ate some pretzels during the interview, but he took it out carefully one by one and never ate when we spoke to him. His beauty on screen was the real thing! He was in a navy shirt and jeans (his own clothes) and wearing a silver ring and a bracelet.

We think you are frequently asked the question like "Do you believe in the supernatural and the existence of the spirit?" during the promotion of "Supernatural". Do you actually believe it? Jared (Padalecki) who plays the younger brother Sam seems to believe it.

JA: You are the first person who ask this question in Japan. I'm realistic by nature, so I'm the type of person who is going to see a logical reason if the light goes out or the door opens by itself. I've never jumped to the conclusion that it was some sort of spirit. Since I have been dealing with the supernatural subject so much in "Supernatural", I became desensitized to that kind of thing and came to think they must have been fake or imagined. So, I will think "It must have been a fault in the electrical system" if the light is flickering and I'm sure that there are reasons that explain it. But I cannot say there is no possibility of the existence of the spirits.

As you don't believe in paranormal, what is your real fear in the real world?

JA: I suppose the whole human being. People cause hurt to other people emotionally and physically, right? There is definitely a greater likelihood of being hit by a car or being attacked by a robber than being cursed by a spirit or a demon. So, it may be said that the real threat to the human being can be the fellow human being.

You seem to be able to watch the horror movie coolly. But we think you often have to film in some creepy places, have you had any experiences that scare you? Or have you ever been frightened by tricks of your costars?

JA: I'm not easily frightened. When I'm on a creepy set or in an unusual place, I'm going to turn back calmly or go further to investigate. Though I've never had an experience of finding something weird. As for the tricks by the costars, we do some little tricks each other but not elaborate ones.

We heard that you do most of your stunts. How about this show? It seems very hard because there is a lot of physically taxing action scenes in every episode, like you have to rescue the drowning boy when you have been held under water.

JA: I have a great time doing it.[Laugh] I even get scorched by my stunt double. Despite the fact that he comes to the set in the morning and waits for the scene in the same costume as mine, I do everything by myself and his scene seems to never come.[Laugh] Sometimes there are really dangerous stunts and I'm not allowed to do it by myself. But we haven't got stunts like jumping from a building in this show, so I do the stunts like a fist fight, bumping against a wall or a bookshelf. I think that Jared and I do 80 to 90% of the stunts in the show by ourselves.

You played the supporting roles in "Dawson's Creek", "Dark Angel" and "Smallville". You play the lead role for the first time in "Supernatural" and the show has made waves, so you must feel that you are finally in the spotlight. What is the most difficult thing you have faced along the way?

JA: I've been always thinking that everything is important in my growth process. I'm quite sure that I've been going along step by step and going up the ladder little by little. I had a lot to learn from the roles I've played in the past and I have to give them the credit for making me the actor I am today. My self-confidence and professionalism in playing the lead role has been developed during the period. Fortunately, I have no experience of starving myself by failing audition after audition. Though I was playing supporting roles or small roles for a long time.

To be continued to the August issue...
